How to Measure Your Car for a Custom-Fit Cover (or Skip the Tape)

People assume buying a cover means crawling around the car with a tape measure. For a custom-fit cover, you can skip all of that. Here is the easy way, and the proper way if you still want to measure.

The easy way: skip the tape

A custom-fit cover is patterned from the factory dimensions of your exact car. Pick your make, model and year and the length, width and height are already built into the cut, along with the mirror pockets in the right spots. There is nothing to measure and nothing to guess. If you want to measure it yourself

Maybe you are buying a universal cover, or you just like to be sure. Park on flat ground and take three measurements.

1. Length. Run the tape along the side from the front bumper to the rear bumper, following the body rather than cutting straight across.
2. Width. Measure the widest point of the body. Decide whether you want the cover to sit over the mirrors or tuck behind them, since that changes the number.
3. Height. Measure from the ground to the highest point of the roof, including roof rails if you have them.

Round each figure up a little. A cover should reach the lower body all round, not stop short at the panels.
